On Tuesday at 9 p.m. CET, the UEFA Women's Champions League will start up again with the first leg of the quarterfinal between AS Roma and FC Barcelona.
Jonatan Giráldez and his team are trying to get to the semi-finals for the fifth year in a row. However, this game will be a huge test against a club that has never made it this far before and will be cheered on by about 35,000 people.
Barca fans have good memories of the Stadio Olimpico because it's where the men finished their historic treble in 2009.
On Wednesday, March 29, at 6:45 p.m. CET, the second leg of this tie will be played at Spotify Camp Nou.
What we know so far
Barca won this title for the first time in 2021 and came in second place last year. They finished ahead of Bayern Munich in Group D because they scored more goals than Bayern Munich. Benfica of Portugal and Rosengrd of Sweden were the two teams that didn't advance after those two.
Roma, on the other hand, had to get through the group stage, where they beat Glasgow City, Paris FC, and Sparta Prague. When they got to the group stage, they showed what they were made of by giving VfL Wolfsburg all they could handle in Group A. The other teams in their group were St. Polten from Austria and Slavia Prague.
Roma are in charge of Italy
Roma got into the Champions League because they came in second place in Serie A last season. They've never won the Italian championship before, but in 2022/23, they have an 8-point lead over Juventus, who won the last five championships.
A lot of that success has come from two people who are well-known to fans of blaugrana. Vicky Losada was captain of the senior team and played more than 300 games for Barca. Andressa Alves, from Brazil, was here from 2016 to 2019.
This is the first time Barca and Roma have ever played against each other in a real game, and it's only the second time the Catalans have played against an Italian team in the UWCL. The only other time this happened was in the round of 32 in 2019, when Barça won 4-1 overall.
